Racale. There are traces of human presence on its territory preceding the Messapian  Civilization. Sources attest the city being of Roman origins, founded by Heraclius, freedman of Caesar Augustus, but someone traces the name of the town back to Hercules, the Mythic Greek Hero.
The first documents (1190) link the possession of the area to the name of the Norman Tancredi. The property then passed on to the De Lutianos, De Marras, Pisanellos, Tolomeis, and finally to the Guevaras, counts of Trani. Witnesses of that period are two towers of the XV century that soar above the Ducal Palace. Of great interest is the church of Saint Mary of Heaven, with the Benedictine coenoby,  which was once attached to it, dating back to the XI century.
The name comes from “Kale polis”, a name given by the Hellenic colonizers coming from Greece, meaning Beautiful City. During 265 B.C., Gallipoli was conquered by the Romans that improved the communication systems of the city, connecting Gallipoli to the Trajan Way, this enabled a faster connection with the Balkans, they also improved the Harbour activities turning the city into a military town and later on into a municipium. Nowadays Gallipoli is one of the most important tourist cities of Salento and surely of whole Italy, having developed without forgetting the history and traditions of its people.
